GENERAL:
The Director of Youth Ministry will have primary responsibility for youth ministry grades 7-12 and youth activities for First Presbyterian Church. The Director will develop and deliver a curriculum of programs that initiates and cultivates Christian growth, service, education and fellowship. This includes developing programs and resources that will assist our youth in becoming more biblically literate and that will provide spiritual care for youth who have experienced transitions (i.e., divorce, grief, loss), and to provide service opportunities to further the faith development of the youth. The Director will build relationships with and between the youth and their families and the church.
I. YOUTH MINISTRY
- A. Administration
**Seeing to the day to day operation of all the church’s programs for youth.
**Coordinate with DCE that all literature and supplies needed for youth programs are ordered and are available as needed.
**Supervising the regular assessment of personnel needs of the youth programs.
**Working with the Youth Work Sub-Committee and the Christian Education Committee in making the annual budget request for the youth programs.
**Coordinating the use of church facilities, vehicle(s), and equipment in the youth programs.
**Coordinating youth activities with Choir Director.
**Serving as a liaison between the youth programs and the congregation as a whole.
**Representing First Presbyterian Church in denominational and ecumenical youth activities and programs.
- B. Curriculum Development
**Providing guidance along with the DCE in the selection of curricula for youth programs and Sunday School.
**Supervising regular assessment along with DCE of youth curricula and program resources.
**Devising and developing new programs and the resources needed for youth.
**Staying familiar with program ideas and resources which are available and appropriate to our youth’s needs.
- C. Leadership Development
**Planning for and sharing in the training of leaders for the church’s youth programs.
**Providing opportunities and experiences for young people which help them develop their own leadership potential.
- D. Teaching
**Substitute teaching Youth Sunday School classes as needed.
**Leading programs frequently for youth: including Bible lessons that are given relevant application to the issues facing our youth.
- E. Counseling
**Be accessible to assist youth, especially to those who are facing problems or decisions in their lives.
**Providing information to high school students about vocational counseling opportunities, Presbyterian Colleges, and Presbyterian scholarships and student loans.
**Calling on youth and their families to enlist the resources and participation of parents to strengthen youth participation, in order to understand their needs and to strengthen their ties to the church and its programs.
- F. Fellowship
**Helping to provide an atmosphere of friendship and acceptance for youth that will undergird all the programs of the church.
**Developing a variety of fellowship opportunities for youth within our church and with other youth groups in the community and in the presbytery.
**Relating and interacting with youth in groups and on a one-to-one basis through active participation in programs at church and active interest and involvement in their lives away from the church.
- G. Mission
**Planning and leading activities which will enable youth to catch a clearer vision of the mission of the church and will provide opportunities for them to use their own time and talents in ministries of love and service to other people.
- H. Worship
**Participate actively in the worship of First Presbyterian Church.
**Work with youth to plan effective group worship experiences.
**Work with youth to plan and sustain a consistent practice of personal spiritual development.
II. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Director will work under the direction of and in close relationship with the Senior Pastor and in concert with other members of the professional and support staff. He/She will be expected to coordinate all programs and activities through the Christian Education Committee and Session.
III. BASIC AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- A mature faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to personal discipleship and the ministry of the church
- A solid Biblical and theological foundation in the Reformed tradition.
- Personal integrity, kindness, humility, and a good sense of humor
- A desire to nurture and participate in the life of an authentic Christian community
- The ability to equip, inspire and encourage people to develop their spiritual gifts and dedicate them to the work of Jesus Christ
- Commitment to and experience with the outreach programs and social justice issues
- Administrative and organizational skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- The ability to work cooperatively with a strong and talented staff
- The ability to work with a committed lay leadership
- Working knowledge of latest information technology
- Baccalaureate degree
